I know it's late but...

Golden Globe opinions!

I feel that I've agreed with a lot of people, but have somehow also disagreed COMPLETELY on some celebs.

Now, one of my new goals is to gain a better understanding of men's fashion, because currently, yes, I can definitely spot a well-dressed man. But I feel I lack the passion and innate instinct when it comes to menswear that I have for women's apparel. Call me female, oops. That being said, I won't really touch on the males, besides maybe one that I actually had an opinion about. (Besides the obvious no's)

So, let's list some of my faves, that probably rank up there on anyone's lists.

I'm staring at my latest issue of Cosmo (while drinking wine, watching E! News, laying in bed in VS pajamas, and going between this page and Facebook, I'm literally a walking stereotype it's disgusting), and the cover girl is definitely one of my faves.

Mila Kunis in Vera Wang

Not only is her dress one of the night's top colors (Catherine Zeta-Jones, Angelina Jolie, and Elisabeth Moss all donned the evergreen hue), but it just looks great on her. She's definitely someone who everyone knows, but is just making her mark as a definitive A-lister with her role in "Black Swan" (which I haven't seen yet, but have heard great things). As she says in Cosmo, "I'm not famous; at best, I'm recognizable." I feel like that may change after this gown. While it sounds lame, I firmly believe in a dress making (or breaking) a career. Think Halle Berry in her sheer floral topped wine-colored Elie Saab gown when she was the first black female to win the Oscar Best Actress. Think J. Lo showing up next to P. Diddy in her deep-V (all the way to her belly button) Versace number that people are still talking about. The color works for Mila. The styling is beyond perfection. If her hair was down, it would complicate the intricate rouching. Any other wild jewelry would've taken away from the dress. Love it.

Lea Michele in Oscar de la Renta

Lea Michele had a lot to live up to after her gorgeous black ball gown from last year's awards, and this year she stepped up to the plate in this pink Oscar de la Renta number. I just think it's so age appropriate. Youthful, without being slutty, fashion-forward, without being over-the-top. I mainly love the turquoise ring she wears with it, I love unexpected color combinations.

Leighton Meester in Burberry Prosum

I HATED this dress from the moment she arrived on E!'s cameras. However, I looked again, and it actually grew on me. I loved the Jimmy Choo shoes instantly, I mean, platform + sparkles can win me over any day, and I had initially said if the dress lost the sleeves I'd like it more. But I realized, it IS Leighton, and she's not going to ever wear a run of the mill dress. The puffy sleeves add drama, as it did for many celebs that night (Angelina, Anne), and I think the styling helped this dress overall.

Emma Stone in Calvin Klein Collection

A lot of critics were mixed on this look. Honestly, I do prefer her as a redhead, but the creamy orange look works well with her new bleach blonde look. The spray tan is subtle, yet necessary to complement her hair shade and dress hue, and the minimalist look works great with a non-neutral color. The simple hairstyle goes well with it all, and she obviously has the bod to wear such a sleek, hugging dress. Good for her.

Sofia Vergara in Vera Wang

How could you not like this? It shows off her bod in a great way. I won't say curves, because Hollywood's idea of curves is actually having a rack and a somewhat existence of hips. I guarantee she's tiny in real life. Anyway, if she would've worn black accessories, I would've hated it for the matchy-matchy reason, but obviously this is is just flawless. Her whole look is just utter bombshell, from the hair to the boobs to the jewelry to the make-up. Gorgeous.

Anne Hathaway in Armani Prive

Probably one of my utmost favorites. Even though it's a high neck with long sleeves, the cut-out back and sequin coverage add drama and sexiness. Plus, she just looks radiant. It's a very unexpected dress, which definitely always adds to the "it" factor. No one wants to see some typical red carpet gown. This is current. This is perfection. And it just makes me so happy that she came from some tween in desperate need of style in "Princess Diaries" to these kind of moments.

image from cocoperez.com
Eva Longoria in Zac Posen

Mixed reviews on this as well. I think it's a great black dress. Her titties look amazing! Plus, the cut is original, the pin adds some interest, and her neutral lip look with smoky eyes works nicely. It's classic, it's sexy, and she can pull off so many different looks.

January Jones in Versace

I think this is an awesome risk. The red is beautiful, but the risk is in the cut and how overtly sexy this is. It would've been too much with crazy jewels and smoky eyes, but the retro styling tones down the body-baring to create a great balance.

Almost..

image from cocoperez.com
Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier

This would literally be on my best-dressed list if it wasn't for her hair. PUT IT UP! Why wear it down when it hides the sheer classiness of the neckline? With a low, loose updo, this would've been great!

image from cocoperez.com
Christina Hendricks in Romona Keveza

SO CLOSE. They said exactly what I was thinking on Fashion Police. If she put her hair up, it would've been fine! With a huge flower like that, why the hell would she wear her hair down. It competes, and pretty much blends right in. Ugh.

image from cocoperez.com
Megan Fox in Armani Prive

She's obviously beautiful, but the sparkles in this gown remind me of prom. It fits her nicely, but I just can't get over the fact that she should be giving a speech about why she should be Miss America 2011. Not that there's anything wrong with prom/pageant gowns (I love them!), but they're not meant for the red carpet.

image from cocoperez.com
Natalie Portman in Viktor & Rolf

It's not a heinous enough dress for me to completely hate it, but I can't really put my finger on it. I definitely hate that stem from the rose in the middle, but I also don't like the pink/red combo. She's a walking Valentine Day card. Especially with the overkill of the red bag and red shoes. If the dress were black or white, then it may have worked. If the bag was silver, maybe again. The necklace is kind of too overpowering as well. Meh, I don't really know. I just don't like it.

MY NO, AWFUL LIST. Ew.

image from cocoperez.com
Scarlett Johansson

Her hair is like the bride of Frankenstein. Her dress blends into her skin. Her hair color in its entirety is dull. The cut of the top of the dress is too breezy/old for her age. She just looks like hell, but I guess I would too if I just announced a split from hottie Ryan Reynolds.

image from cocoperez.com
Michelle Williams in Valentino Resort Collection

Even though this is meant for a resort, and it should obviously NOT be on the red carpet, I still would hate it. It's horrible! Why anyone would think that this works for an awards show is beyond me. There's a point where your personal style needs to meet the path of fashion for a fancy event, and she was way too in her own world. There's really nothing else to say.

image from cocoperez.com
Heidi Klum in Marc Jacobs

Okay Heidi, what happened to short little numbers to show off your obviously great legs? I mean, you're the judge of Project Runway, what the hell? This collection overall hasn't pleased me, and I understand she couldn't show up in the more acceptable gown that Kim Kardashian and Nicole Kidman both wore in the latest issues of Glamour and Harper's Bazaar, respectively, but I'm sure there were better options out there. This is like the 70s threw up on her.

image from cocoperez.com
Christina Aguilera in Zuhair Murad

I've been hating on her lately. She's clearly beautiful, but why does she always just look so, blah? The top doesn't fit, making her look way large when she's obvs not, the hair is stiff, and her make-up is caked on. Come onnnnnnn!

image from cocoperez.com
Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad

Okay, why people have been saying this look is good is beyond me. Yes, she looks stunning physically. Her make-up is amazing, but that's all I can say. The diamond cape is just plain weird and reminds me of some slutty communion. The dress underneath is boring. Her hair has that weird half-pony feeding into a full pony look that I'm pretty sure the majority of my second grade class rocked with pink scrunchies. The diamond cuff doesn't upgrade it, J. Lo, sorry. Nope.
Zuhair Murad

Julianne Moore in Lanvin

All I can say: Awkward, old genie. Oops?

But overall, there were so many other fabulous looks, and a few other bombs. Can't wait for the SAGs and Oscars!

Spring Semester Dressing

I find it funny that you would think that "Fall Semester" would be colder than "Spring Semester" for obvious reasons. In Champaign, Illinois, though, that is entirely untrue. Basically what happens is upon returning to campus, which is another 4 days of utter boredom for me since all of my friends at different schools have left me, we have to trek all over the Chambana streets while wearing 3 different layers of sweaters/cardigans/cozy coats (or in the case of every lemming sorority girl, Northface+Uggs -- which I am embarrassingly guilty of on occasion, but don't worry, I've now purchased enough flat, warm boots with proper linings in brown AND black so I won't have to step foot in an UGGly, hehe, pair of boots again), scarves, gloves (obvs with proper texting capabilities), hats, etc. only to get to class to peel off such apparel and be sweating your ass off trying to squeeze into some lecture hall that clearly needs to be remodeled because the desk you're trying to balance your morning Starbucks on is about to fall off its hinges. Needless to say, you become very uncomfortable. Thus, Spring Semester and dressing for its unpredictable extremes is very difficult.

So, I have put together a few pieces that can be worn during freezing January/February, but won't have to be cast away when there's a fluke warm day in March (let's pray that day is Unofficial, please, sun!), only to return to dreary, chilly temperatures.

Forever 21, $37.80

As Calvin Klein and Donna Karan have so kindly demonstrated for us on Fall runways, neutrals are back, and in a big way. I think it's a great trend since everyone seems to gravitate towards neutral shades at one point or another anyway since people aren't intimidated if a piece matches a bunch of things in their closet. That being said, a nice trench is always a good bet. While you probably can't get away with wearing this somewhat lighter jacket just yet, it's a great transitional piece. I do like trenches in unexpected colors, hell, I like anything really in unexpected colors, but I have been very into the neutral scene lately as well. A cream or camel trench is perfect for layering over a chunky knit, and you can still use your winter accessories if it's still a bit cold out.

Club Monaco

Ever since I bought my little sister arm warmers from The Gap for Christmas, I've been obsessed with the whole idea. I love the long knit function, especially when you wear a short-sleeved shirt underneath your coat, and the draft goes right through those sleeves. These gloves combine the best of both worlds for a really chic look. Leather gloves are a staple in any winter weather fashionista's wardrobe, but adding the long knit arm to them is genius and looks really polished.

Bakers, $15.90 on sale!

Unfortunately, as functional as flat riding boots are, by the time it gets slightly warm, people would rather show off a pedi, or at least get closer to doing so, then toughing it out in a winter/fall look. That's why this semester is just so hard, I'm telling you! It's too cold, but all you want to wear is your favorite pair of sandals. Try not to give in and cause your toes to get frostbite, though, and invest in a pair of flats you love. While you really don't have to "invest" in these per se, since they're marked down from $45, they have a really luxe look to them with the gold-plated toe. The red is a nice accent color, especially to those neutrals I've been raving about.

Urban Outfitters, $49

Light-weight sweaters are the answer to transitional wear. Longer, tunic-inspired fits are perfect due to the fact they can be paired with knit leggings or skinny jeans in the colder months, or skirts or denim shorts when it gets warmer. Plus, the vertical black and white stripes on this cardigan are super flattering for any figure.

Express, $49.90

When going out on campus, it's pretty easy to throw on some opaque tights underneath a skirt. This skirt is a nice twist on the basic bandage with the diagonal pattern. With a black off-the-shoulder top and some open-toe cobalt blue pumps, this skirt can work easily into the end of the semester when it actually feels like spring, but can still be worn right now with a boyfriend blazer and chic scarf.

Style Pet Peeves

In case you couldn't tell, the higher the heel, the better for me. If you can't handle heels, then please just wear cute flats. Don't bother with 2-inch kitten heels or ugly ass flat platforms. Examples to follow.

MICHAEL Michael Kors

Why, Michael Kors? Let it be known, he is my favorite designer. But what the hell is this? These literally remind me of these huge black flip flop platforms I got from like, Wet Seal in 5th grade and thought I looked so good. Save the flat platform for grandma sneakers, please and thanks.

Jimmy Choo

What. The. Hell? These make me so uncomfortable. I don't understand what the point of kitten heels are? So you can make the click of heels when walking down the street, but when you look at your feet, you're just wearing the training wheel equivalent of the stiletto? It's a scam. It's pathetic. I get some people can't endure the pain of heels, for whatever reason, but don't even attempt these sad excuses for shoes. The worst part is I know so many people off-handed that wear kitten heels.. this NEEDS to stop.

Christian Siriano, Spring 2011

I love haute couture, and I'm always the first person to stick up for out-there looks on Project Runway when my friends don't get how it works for fashion. But this I cannot justify. She looks like a red Christmas tree. I don't even know how a ready-to-wear piece could be constructed from this? No. I will never get the really outlandish dresses on the runway. I get it's a show, but a huge factor should always be the translation into OFF the runway.

Free People

I will always hate banded bottom dresses. I think they're trashy, and usually the tops become so loose they should just be used as maternity wear. Just, no.

If only..

I had the money to afford all of these shoes I'm currently wishing I could purchase. Actually, even if I did, I'd only wear a handful of them frequent enough to get my money's worth because I forget that by going back to school in a few weeks means trekking to and from classes in the frozen tundra that is Champaign, Illinois. Hmph. Anyway.

Baker's, $69.99

How Kim Kardashian are these? Ankle straps always trick me, because I figure they're a lot cuter than they are until they cut off the length of your leg, therefore making you look stubby. But whatever, I need a more professional pair of nude pumps than my marbled peep toe ones.

Forever 21, $24.80

I have wanted some black wedges for sooo long, but have yet to get them. I really don't know why, I guess because it's a way to get bring in some height and style to a casual outfit, but you don't look like some hooker walking to class in 5-inch stilettos.

Forever 21, $35.80

My sister would probably make fun of me for wanting these. This is as probably as close to any sort of camping/hiking/outdoorsy activity I would get. Sherling-lined high heeled boots. I just picture them with leggings and chunky layered sweaters.

Ruthie Davis, "Spike" from Fall/Winter 2010

These could kill someone. And I want them. The price wasn't listed on the actual Ruthie Davis site, but I remember seeing somewhere that they're well over a grand. I just don't get how you could not want sleek booties covered in spikes in the back. Totally perfect for back-kicking the annoying sluts behind you in line at the bathroom in Red Lion, complaining about how their bronzer has already faded.

Ruthie Davis, "Dart" from Spring/Summer 2010

I know, these are from last year's collection, but the Tiffany blue bottom with the back-zipper detailing rivals that of red-soled Loubies. Well not completely, but whatever.

Obviously only a few of these are actually reasonable, and I really hope that my husband is rich enough to afford these ridiculous shoe desires I randomly get. The sad thing is I'm so serious since journalists don't make much $$$$. :/
